The FAST Test for Strokes Used by Senior Care Professionals in Altamonte Springs, FL

May 8, 2018 by Matt Auker

A stroke happens when the blood supply to the brain stops. It can happen either by a sudden artery blockage or by a rupture of a blood vessel. Whatever the cause might be, the consequences are usually very serious.

A stroke can result in serious disabilities, but that’s not even the worst thing about it. In many cases, a stroke causes death. The only way to prevent the worst-case scenario from happening is reacting on time. This is why senior care providers need to be trained to recognize the symptoms of stroke.

Our senior care agency in Altamonte Springs, FL is honoring the American Stroke Awareness Month by sharing their method of stroke recognition. The method in question is named the FAST test.

How the FAST Test Works

The best thing about the FAST test is that it’s easy to remember. It because the word ‘FAST’ stands for the following things:

  • Face: The care providers should ask the senior to smile and if one side of their face droops, it’s a sign that something’s wrong.
  • Arms: The senior also needs to be asked if they can lift both of their hands in the air without any problems.
  • Speech: The senior should be asked to repeat a simple sentence so that the care providers would be able to see if something has changed with their ability to speak properly.
  • Time: If any of these three symptoms are noticed, the caregivers are required to call 911 straight away.
